I Guess This Is Common

My sister recently traveled to Pennsylvania to retrieve a car from our aging aunt, who recently moved into assisted living. I had high expectations of this car, a 2012 Ford Escape “Limited” which was a literal old lady drove it to church on sundays and parked it back in the garage kind of car. Well, almost.

Just a few short years ago (oye, actually, 2003) I picked up a car from the very same garage, same story except it was our grandmother’s car and she had passed away some year or two prior. That was... wait for it... a brown 1981 Aries K wagon (automatic, sadly). It was mint, but still a 1981 Aries wagon and the suspension was shot, hoses were dry-rotted, and in my ignorant relative youth I didn’t keep the car very long.

So now, the Ford. I figured we were getting a newer, better version of the Old Lady car, but for better and worse, I was wrong.

At a glance, it’s nice:

The interior is in good condition, too. It was garage kept and driven to the grocery store and church, and, apparently, a whole bunch of other places, too? It’s got a surprising 95,000 miles on it! The Aries had, I think, 33,000 miles? And it was 22 years old at the time. So my aunt is more active, great. 95,000 isn’t a ton these days. But wait.

Kinja'd!!!

Ugh, both sides are like that. I mean, it’s still pretty clean underneath and would be well worth fixing those spots. But seriously! I doubt she drove much in the snow, but I guess she’d drive on salty wet roads, and I’m doubtful it got any washing except if the dealer did it for her.

I guess the point is, do my parents really want to start doing body work on this thing? They could take it or leave it, and this alone might be the decider. Now that I think about it, I’ve seen LOTS of this generation Escape with rusty rear fenders.

In any case, I’d be happy to sell this on CL, it’s pretty nice and would truly be a good car for someone, for a long time, and I’m sure no one in my family cares about squeezing every last dollar out of it so I could price it to sell fast. The only question is, am I going to be listing this one or the Honda? They’re similarly equipped, but for the age and   mileage difference and the obvious rust. The Honda’s had a much harder life, but it’s also a Honda. Which would you take?

These things are nothing special, they drive kinda like a UPS truck.

( It’s not nice to the UPS truck, I should take that away)

I’d say you were a very intelligent youth not to keep an Aries wagon.

After being in Colorado so long, I’m always sadly reminded about rust in the northeast. Seeing relatively new cars with rust is a bummer.

These Escape/Tributes seemed to run forever, from a few family members that had them. I wouldn’t be scared to keep one.

I’d take the Escape and use it to learn how to do body work. If you fail miserably NBD, you can go to a junk yard and get a new to you rear fender that isn’t rusted or get one that is and try again.

Essayons!!! “Let us try”

Eh, Ford build quality even with careful owners is not something I would want to be stuck with long term. I say keep the car you own, sell the Escape, and set aside some of the money into a repair fund for the Honda. The second gen Escapes just don’t do it for me.

Very common on the Escapes, my wifes ‘05 (1st gen) is just starting to rust in the wheel wells, but at 15 years old and 165k miles (og a Cali rental car, then I suspect it spent most of it’s life down south behind an RV).

The second gen was a huge improvement over the first, but these are very much economy cars and it shows. I like ours well enough, it’s been a reliable and dependable vehicle, but it’s a squeaky rattly thing with hard plastic everywhere and cheap flat uncomfortable seats. Spend some good seat time in it before deciding to sell it or keep it.

I’d dump whatever has the highest miles. To me, miles are the most important.

It’s basically a Mazda so it’s going to rust.

What kind of Honda? I’m leaning that way already.

I drove a ups truck, not nice.  FedEx allows carpeting and a radio.

Eh, I haven’t driven this one but they’re “fine” in my opinion. Totally forgettable but adequate transportation, IMHO.

Eh, it’s my mother making the decision ultimately. I think she should keep neither  and just get a newer, better CR-V because she really likes the ‘07 she has now, it’s just... tired. They got it for $2,500 in a pinch after a tree crushed both their cars in the same storm (same tree) about a year ago.

Well, it’s not really me anyway, it would be my mother’s car. I think she should sell both and get a newer, better Honda.

2007 CR-V. I’m leaning toward “sell both and get a newer Honda”

Oh all too common. I just had a same year Escape on my used lot with 20k less miles. The rust was not as bad but still starting to bubble.

I’m not sure which I’d take. These don’t seem too bad reliability wise but rust scares me.

haha, the Volvo’s MINE ALL MINE but actually, I’m amazed no one else commented on the background, like in most oppo posts. Post a pic of a car with literally any other car in the background the size of the head of a pin and someone will pick it out.

I like that idea, I’ve been looking at some Honda’s for fun myself as possible next vehicles. I like the current gen Civic but would want one with the volume knob. I think the hatch version is cool for practicality.  I also like the idea of the Passport a lot.

That’s Ford rust, my 2017 Escape company car is bubbling at the bottoms of the doors. Granted, it does have over 67,000 miles, but cars shouldn’t do that if they were painted right a t the factory.

I really wanted to say “but how it’s cared for is more important” but I can’t think of a single car I’ve owned that was better than an identical car with fewer miles. Maaaaayyybe my wife’s 2005 Volvo S40 - it was dealer-serviced from day 1 and she really truly only drove it on the highway, to 140,000 miles and at that time it would have been hard to find one in better shape at any mileage.
